A Tribute to Poppy: A Lifelong Companion
There are some bonds in life that are so deep, so unbreakable, that they stay with you forever. For me, that bond was with my sweet Poppy. I first brought Poppy into my life when I was just 17 years old—my very first dog of my own. She was a tiny little bundle of joy, and little did I know back then, she would be by my side through everything that life had to offer.
Over the years, Poppy wasn’t just a pet; she was my constant companion, my confidante, and my best friend. She’s been there for every milestone in my adult life, through all of the ups and downs, the moments of joy and the moments of heartbreak. She never judged, she never left, she just loved me, unconditionally.
Throughout all my travels, Poppy was always there to welcome me home. No matter how far I went, she was the first to greet me with excitement, her tail wagging furiously as if to say, “I’ve missed you!” She was there through my many adventures, waiting patiently for my return, and offering the comfort I needed during some of my most difficult times. She could sense when I needed her the most, offering nothing but love and support. Her presence was a quiet strength that carried me through.
Poppy witnessed my journey of growing up and growing into myself, and she was there through it all. Ryan and I met at 15, and our relationship has had its ups and downs. Through every reunion, Poppy was there to welcome him back into the fold of our family. Even when I decided to galavant around the world (more times than I can count!), she missed him terribly.
In 2020, Poppy finally got her dream—Ryan and I reunited for good, and she got to move in with her ‘daddy’. She had waited so long for this, and I could see how much joy it brought her to have both of us together, under one roof. That was the moment we truly became a family.
Then, in 2021, our daughter Evelyn was born. Poppy, being the loving dog that she was, immediately became the protector of our little girl. She stayed by Evelyn’s side at all times, always looking out for her. I’ll never forget the way Poppy would sit protectively beside Evelyn when she wasn’t feeling well, not moving from her spot, not leaving her side, showing us all how deep her love was for her little sister.
For 17 years, Poppy brought so much life to our family. She was playful, loving, and full of joy. Her spirit never wavered, and she kept on living with enthusiasm and affection, right up until the end. But in January 2025, we received the heartbreaking news—Poppy had a brain tumor, and it was taking its toll on her. As difficult as it was to accept, we knew that we had to let her go.
On February 3, 2025, Ryan and I made the excruciating decision to help our sweet girl cross over the rainbow bridge. It was the hardest thing we’ve ever had to do, but we knew it was time. Poppy’s final day was beautiful—she was fed her favorite steak, given an ice cream treat, and taken to her favorite spot—Sidmouth Beach. As she sat there, watching the waves crash, I like to think she knew how much she was loved. Her spirit was calm, and she had the best last day we could give her.
I am heartbroken. I don’t know how to process the thought of not having her by my side anymore. Poppy was my first dog, my best friend, and a piece of my heart. Losing her feels like losing a part of me, a hole that no one and nothing can fill. There’s a pain in my chest that I’m not sure will ever go away, but I am forever grateful for the years we had together.
Poppy has left behind a legacy of love. She was more than just a dog—she was family. And while she may no longer be physically with us, I know her spirit will always be here. She will forever be in our hearts, and her love will continue to guide us, just as it always has.
Goodbye, my sweet Poppy. You were everything to me, and I will never forget the joy you brought into my life. Thank you for the years, the love, and the comfort. You will always be my baby girl, and I will love you forever.
Rest in peace, sweet girl. 🐾💖
The Rainbow Bridge - Author unknown...
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
